Summer Camp Extra Info

Michael Newman | Announcements | Monday, June 16th, 2008

All Summer Camp Cubs & Adults:

Summer camps are fast approaching! The following is some extra information that was presented at the informational meeting held at Camp Mack on the night of June 12.

I’m sure you’re all aware that this year’s camp program is KCAMELOT! And that the camp staff is trying to inject as much medieval flair into the program as possible. It sounds like a very cool program and from some of the props we saw they are going all out to make things exciting for the boys.

FOR ALL:
* MEDICAL FORMS: If you haven’t already turned one in at registration it must be completed at camp sign-in.

* MEDICATIONS: All meds must be in the original container with dosage instructions. If not in the original container or dosage instructions are not as labeled you must have a signed letter that explains the change. Have all meds ready at sign-in. Medications will be dispensed by one of our Pack leaders unless the med must be refrigerated. All refrigerated meds will be stored and disbursed at the medical lodge.

* CUB UNIFORMS are not required, we’re not expected to wear them for regular program.

* CROCS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE FOOTWEAR FOR DAILY PROGRAM. Sneakers, walking, shoes, hiking boots, are expected. It is strongly encouraged that you send plenty of extra dry socks. Wet feet/socks can lead to painful blisters. Crocs, water shoes or flip-flips are acceptable for use in the pool and shower areas only.

* FAMILY NIGHT REGISTRATION: If you need to sign-up more adults or children for the family night dinner/campfire (held on the last night of each session) your last opportunity is at camp sign-in.

* CELL PHONES, CAMP-WIDE: all staff and adults are strongly encouraged to only make use of cell phones when out of sight of campers. For those boys who are feeling a little homesick, the temptation to call Mom & Dad becomes much more immediate and worrisome if they see adults talking on the phone.

* TRADING POST MONEY: Boys will be responsible for their own money for the trading post. Please do not send large amounts of cash or credit cards with them. Please speak with your boy regarding purchasing guidelines before camp. Specifically, things like just how many candy bars may be OK in one day. If you are worried about this, please speak with a leader and we’ll make our best efforts to help your boy with spending wisely.

* The NEW GRAVEL PARKING LOT on the west side of the camp road is complete and will be open for use.
2009 summer program sign-ups are already posted, start thinking about which week you would like to attend next year.

FOR DAY CAMPERS:

* Program hours are from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Please be a little early on drop-off and prompt at pickup.

* You’ll have most of the same program as the Resident and Webelos weeks, but will get more chances to try out each program are since you’ll be there five days instead of three!

FOR CUB RESIDENT CAMPERS
* Sign-in for our Pack is at 1:30 pm. Please be prompt, sign-in is done on a Pack basis and they have told us the schedule will be tight.

* After sign-in the pack will visit the trading post to receive camp t-shirts, take a tour of the camp and take our swim-test.

* To make the swim test go more smoothly it was recommended that the boys wear swim trunks under their regular shorts. Also have a backpack for the afternoon that has a dry towel, shorts, socks and underwear. We will not have time to go back to the camp site for dry clothes or forgotten items.

* Pack/den photo will be after tour and before dinner.

* Encouraged to pack your boy’s belongings in a footlocker or Rubbermaid tote. Label it on the outside w/ Name and Pack. Gear will be transported to the campsite on a camp truck or wagon.

* SNACKS: If your boy brings personal snacks along: please make reasonable choices of snack food and quantity. Also make sure that snacks are stored in an airtight container that can’t be punctured by animals. If a critter can smell it they’ll try to get it. There will be no eating in tents.

FOR WEBELOS CAMPERS:
* All of the items about sign-in listed above apply to you as well. Your sign-in date and time are different of course.

* Strongly encouraged to pack your full uniform for flag ceremonies

* Special program provided by ZooAmerica: they’ll have live dragons and falcons!

* Other cool stuff includes: Movie Night, Camp-wide free-swim, Polar Bear swim, and Outpost night camping.

PROGRAM NOTES:
* Expect most of the camp staff to be in period costume. Boys & adults may wear costumes from the medieval period if they wish.

* Camp-wide all people are under ‘peacetide’ rules. This means that all weapons (metal, wood, plastic or otherwise) are for decoration only and are to remain sheathed/stored at all times.

* At the shooting ranges the boys will have a chance to shoot crossbows, most likely in place of the BB range.

* Handicraft areas will feature: coat-of-arms and loot bags.

* Nature lodge will feature: herbs, astronomy, papermaking.

* Pool to feature jousting. (No idea what that means really but it sounds interesting)

* Camp-wide game will be a medieval carnival with stands and games for the boys to play and win ‘gold coins’ to be redeemed for prizes.

If you have any questions about this info please feel free to call me at (717) 475-7555 anytime. Questions regarding any lingering registration details should be directed to Jeanine Hohman.

Thanks,
Mike Newman

GeoScouting this Sunday

Michael Newman | Events | Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

Hi Everyone!
I hope that the start of summer vacation is treating you very well. Our next Pack 142 event is scheduled for this coming weekend, here’s a few details.

GEOSCOUTING - June 15th, 2:00 - 4:00 pm
Geoscouting is a new type of scavenger hunt where you use a GPS to find your way and do some fun Cub Scout stuff along the way.

Meet at the Lititz Springs Park
(we’ll gather near the main parking lot)

This should be a fun and easy activity for the whole family on Father’s Day. You’ll be a in a group with other Cub families assigned to track down four places within a short walk of the park. You’ll have some clues, a GPS and your wits to find hidden items and make your way to a sweet destination.

Uniform is not required. Sunday’s weather is predicted to be a high of 83F with some clouds, so dress comfortably for the weather and wear shoes appropriate for some walking.

If possible, please RSVP to me via email by Friday night. If you have your own handheld GPS please also let me know that so I can arrange groups accordingly. If you don’t have a GPS don’t worry, we’ll have spares to share and show you how they work.

Hope to see you there!
- Mike

PS: Have you thought about volunteering for the Pack Committee in the fall?
